DAR Museum Docent
The DAR Museum exists as
a department of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution,
and has as its mission to support the Society's goals of preservation, education
and patriotism by collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting the
material cculture and social history of pre-inductrial America.
The DAR Museum Docent Committee
is a volunteer committee under the direction of the Curator General and the
DAR Museum staff. As a member of the committee, the docent's mission is to
support the goals of the DAR Museum by providing the public with tours of
the DAR Museum in an educated, well-trained and professional manner.
DAR Museum Docents provide
an invaluable link between visitors and the collection. Museum Docents offer
guided tours of the 31 museum period rooms and volunteer at least 2 days a
month and serve walk-in visitors as well as special groups and school children.
New Docents participate
in a 4-5 day training course on the museum collection, decorative arts and
tour techniques, while experienced Docents benefit from monthly educational
meetings and trips to local museums and historical attractions. New Docent
Training occurs once or twice a year, as needed but prospective Docents are
encouraged to begin their training through our mentoring program.
Museum Docents are eligible
to purchase and wear a DAR Museum Docent pin after 20 hours of professional
training and 60 hours of an apprenticeship. A bar may be added to the Docent
pin for each 300 hours the Docent serves.
