Chapter Activities
The Mount Vernon Chapter, NSDAR, participates in many historic, patriotic, and community activities, some of which are listed below. You can also see photos of some of these activities on our Photo Albums page.
We also participate in DAR-related business activities, such as attendance at district meetings, the Virginia State Conference, and Continental Congress.
Education
- Support of DAR schools
- DAR scholarships
- Good Citizen and American History awards presented to students
Historic Preservation
- Visits to sites such as Gunston Hall and Mount Vernon to meet with curator or archaeologist regarding ongoing projects
- Support preservation of Virginia landmarks
- Kenmore
- Stratford Hall
- Woodlawn Plantation
- Yorktown Custom House
- Bell Tower at the State Capitol in Richmond
- Jones Point Lighthouse
- Abingdon Muster Grounds
- Restoration of a cannon used by General Edward Braddock during the French and Indian War
Patriotism
- Each year, during the Wreaths Across America program, the Mount Vernon Chapter joins with the Massachusetts Worcester Wreath Company to place over 5,000 wreaths on headstones at Alexandria National Cemetery.
- Annual picnic and retirement of the American flag
- The Mount Vernon Chapter annually donates a flag to be flown over the main gate at Mount Vernon, the historic home of President George Washington. The flag is later retired and presented back to the chapter for donation to a DAR school.
- Annual George Washington birthday activities include a worship service at Christ Church in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, where Washington once worshipped, and a wreath-laying at the tomb of President Washington.
Service to Veterans
- DAR Project Patriot supports America's service personnel in current conflicts abroad. Our most recent Christmas luncheon featured a silent auction, with proceeds going to Project Patriot.
- Provided dinner for the Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed Army Hospital
- Adopted a soldier in Afghanistan
Community Service
- Present awards to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the community
- Present American History awards to elementary school students
- Participate in naturalization services for new American citizens
- Donated books to an Alexandria elementary school
