Chapter Activities

Amherst Chapter members support the residents of the Salem Veterans Affairs Center in Salem, Virginia, by supplying lap robes, personal care items, and other clothing items throughout the year. We also honor our local veterans with our annual Veterans Day Ceremony and Luncheon. The luncheon is catered by our chapter members for our local veterans and their spouses. We also support active duty military through the DAR Project Patriot Committee, which has been responsible for sending coupons collected by the chapter to the U.S. Naval Station in Rota, Spain.

With many educators in our chapter, we have a strong emphasis on education and involvement with our local schools. We support the DAR-supported schools and Indian schools across the country by submitting General Mills Box Tops for Education and used printer cartridges, which the schools use to provide funding for projects in their facilities. Locally, we support Junior American Citizens contests, American History essay contests, and recognize DAR Good Citizens. We have also provided funding to our local museum and historical society in support of a program to provide a history-based coloring book to elementary students in the county.
