Naturalization Ceremonies
Thirty candidates, in the presence of their families, celebrate becoming U.S. citizens at Poplar Forest on April 13th and September 17th, co-sponsored by the Blue Ridge Chapter and Poplar Forest.
My Patriot's Story: A Compilation of Research and Family Stories About Our Patriots.
Three years ago, our chapter members voted to write stories about their patriots and compile them into a book, My Patriot's Story: A Compilation of Research and Family Stories About Our Patriots. We collected 41 stories from 46 members (one patriot may have several daughters who are claiming him), edited the stories, and had it published.
In 2013, My Patriot's Story was honored with the VADAR award for Most Unusual Project.
The
Beginnings�.
The Wreaths Across America event began in Arlington National Cemetery.
Its original purpose was to remember and honor the memory of veterans
buried in the older sections of the cemetery, which was receiving fewer
visitors every year. In 2005, when a picture was placed on the internet
of rows upon rows of snow-covered tomb-stones decorated with green
wreaths with red bows, the idea went viral around the country and
suddenly there was a national interest in duplicating the ceremony.
The project came to Lynchburg in 2008, thanks to DAR member Rachael
Shenigo, when the Blue Ridge Chapter of the National Society Daughters
of the American Revolution (NSDAR) learned that more than 2,300
veterans are buried in Lynchburg�s Old City Cemetery�who represent every
war from the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War. The first local
event was held that December and the number of wreaths placed has
steadily grown. The Old City Cemetery �WAA� event in 2010 placed just
over 700 wreaths, the fourth largest number in Virginia, with Arlington
National Cemetery being the largest.
